The school’s goal to develop proficient writers led them to experiment with Grammarly as part of their ELA curriculum.
The school secured a Grammarly Education account, which was offered free to schools. This tool was integrated into classroom instruction during the academic year 2019-2020. Teachers used the program for real-time error detection and enabled students to correct their mistakes as they wrote. Homework assignments also required students to use Grammarly to refine their work before submission.
Today, hundreds of schools across the nation are paving the way for this innovative hybrid learning approach. These large, open spaces – often playgrounds, schoolyards, or local parks – are not simply arenas for break time physical activities, but actual classrooms where lessons and imaginative play coincide.
For example, a series of prompts about life on a deserted island resulted in narratives filled with vivid imagery and advanced problem-solving strategies. Subsequent discussions about their stories displayed their ability to critically analyze their own thoughts and produced meaningful improvements in their spoken English capabilities.
Surprisingly, accredited program definition the methodology behind Kids on the Yard is not entirely new. It resonates with the theories of Friedrich Froebel and Maria Montessori, leading lights of progressive education over a hundred years ago. Teachers recommended further integration of Grammarly in other subjects requiring written assignments.
This novel method employed by KotY has witnessed promising results. Over a sample of 300 students aged 9-14, the ones exposed to creative writing prompts demonstrated marked improvements in their creative writing abilities, empathy, and reading comprehension. Anecdotal reports from parents also noted increases in self-confidence, improved cognitive flexibility, and more nuanced communication skills in their children.
As English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum adopt technological tools to reinforce educational experience, the use of online grammar checkers in middle schools is gaining traction. This case study explores how a mid-sized middle school in Houston, Texas integrated Grammarly, a leading online grammar checking tool, to improve their students’ literacy skills.

This approach liberates kids from the usual pressure of getting everything correct and enables them to unravel their creative prowess.
