Kids Love Online Homeschooling 7th Grade
Public Group active 6 months, 2 weeks agoAt Maple Elementary School, situated in a lower-income region, purchasing additional learning materials beyond the standard curriculum was not always feasible. Even more, Covid-19 related constraints and remote learning demands led the school to seek affordable, effective online resources. They decided to integrate free online reading comprehension passages into their 3rd-grade curriculum for their convenience, affordability, and user-friendly interactivity.
A reading-rich environment can be another source of vocabulary development. Assigned readings expose students to a variety of words in context, making it easier to understand their meanings and usage. Educators can also encourage independent reading or assign vocabulary-rich texts given the students’ reading capability.
Apart from the difference being made in school, KOTY also underscores the significance of this initiative at the societal level. The lessons these young kids are learning translate into habits and values that will invariably influence their adult lives, empowering them to be self-driven, productive citizens in the workforce.
Grammar checker tools operate by identifying and correcting errors in grammar, syntax, punctuation, and spelling in any given text. They utilize intelligent algorithms to detect errors, which are often missed by human eyes. These handy tools are an excellent support system for middle school students who are in the process of refining their writing skills.
Hailed as an innovative vehicle for change, KOTY has also integrated elements of peer learning into its model. Children are encouraged not only to hold themselves accountable but also their friends. This nurturing of community responsibility has revolutionized attitudes towards procrastination.
However, looking beyond the sheen of convenience, a few notable concerns arise. First and foremost, writing is a complex skill involving not just sound grammar and vocabulary, but also creativity, originality, and critical thinking. Although digital platforms provide numerous tools for grammar and vocabulary practices, fostering creativity and original thinking poses a challenge.
Furthermore, online learning often enables copy-pasting directly from digital sources, thus raising concerns about academic integrity. Middle school forms the groundwork for shaping ethical, responsible learners; thus, this ease of plagiarism may prove detrimental in the long run.
A pilot implementation was undertaken, in which one class of students was exposed to the online reading resources as additional homework, and their progress was monitored and compared with another class that continued with the regular curriculum. The digital class received a range of passages each week, accompanied by comprehension quizzes, and had routine discussions on the passages via video conferences.
Moreover, the lack of social interaction, an integral element of traditional classroom-based learning, contributes negatively to online middle school writing. Peer reviews and group activities can foster critical thinking and creativity while reinforcing concepts in a unique, collaborative manner that online learning platforms often find hard to achieve.
For a much more in-depth analysis of text, ‘Hemingway Editor’ is a useful tool. Beyond grammatical correctness, this tool provides feedback on the readability of a text, highlighting complex sentences, excessive use of adverbs, or passive voice.
Removing the monotony of learning, vocabulary games allow students to interact with words in a more engaging, competitive, and stimulating manner. Activities such as identifying synonyms and antonyms, creating sentences with new words, contextual word games, vocabulary bingo, and crossword puzzles enhance a student’s word knowledge. This gamified method of learning promotes long-term memory retention.
Writing templates can also give a good starting point for kids who find it difficult to begin. The structure provided by templates can guide them through the main elements of their composition, making the task seem less daunting. Encourage children to use these until they are comfortable creating their own structure.
Despite their benefits, a challenge presented by online grammar checkers is the risk of over-reliance. They should be more a guide than a crutch. Their main goal should be building language proficiency among students.
The teachers witnessed a marked improvement in the digital class students’ reading comprehension and vocabulary skills. The online reading materials stimulated students’ interest due to their visually attractive interface and interactive nature. The on-spot results of the quizzes also kept the students motivated.
Moreover, the very convenience of online learning, which might seem detrimental to creativity and originality, can also be its saving grace. A well-designed curriculum can leverage this flexibility to offer multidimensional, unconventional writing prompts, inspiring creativity and originality.
