The 24-hour military time system

Whether telling the time via the direct observation of the stars or some other means, precision is paramount to the military. For the precision required in navigation and the syncing of mission resources of today’s armed forces, everyone must be on the same page. The primary unit of time is the “mean solar day.” A mean solar day is the average of the “true solar day,” which varies slightly in length. There are four times a year the mean and true solar days are equal, by contrast there are also days which time could vary as much as 16 or more minutes. The difference between the mean solar time and true solar time is called the “equation of time.” Military time uses the same number of minutes per hour. It is just a different format in which you can express time. While converting a time from one format to another, there is no need to convert minutes. For easy reference in communications, a letter of the alphabet has been assigned to each time zone. For most daily things, military personnel uses local time as a reference. In order words, “report to duty at zero seven hundred (0700),” would mean you have to be at work at seven a.m., local time. The military operates off a 24-hour clock, beginning at midnight (which is 0000 hours). Is zero two hundred (0200) hours, and so on until 11 p.m. The next portion of the military time code will tell the recipient that you are referring to a full hour (e.g., five o’clock) and not a time in-between full hours (e.g., half past five). Military time is a format for expressing time based on the 24-hour clock.
