With this in mind, we conducted an observational research study to shed light on the development, challenges, and importance of writing skills in children.
In an era dominated by technology, traditional methods of imparting education are being revisited and revamped. Among the latest trends in early child education is the use of phonics games, designed to enhance children’s reading and linguistic skills in a fun and engaging manner.
Effective time management is integral in overcoming procrastination. One of the common methods is the Pomodoro Technique, which involves working for a set amount of time, typically 25 minutes, and taking a 5-minute break. This method combines the benefits of effective time intervals and frequent breaks towards retaining information. Other methods include making to-do lists, using time-tracking apps, planning schedules, and prioritizing tasks on the level of urgency and importance.
The initial observations began at a vibrantly decorated classroom where students were engaged in ‘Choral Reading.’ This activity entailed the students reading aloud together from a text. During this activity, it was noticeable that less fluent readers were using their peers’ support to overcome their reading hurdles. Rewarded with reduced reading anxiety, these students showcased increased self-esteem and improved word recognition.
The major challenge encountered was the initial resistance from students towards interacting with the new digital tool. However, as they gradually recognized the benefits, apprehensions diminished. Additionally, minor technological glitches occurred, including log-in issues which were quickly resolved by the software team.
Early literacy development is an identifying indicator of future academic success, and hence, becomes a focal point in primary education. An essential component of this literacy development is reading fluency. The present observation records insights on various reading fluency activities adopted in primary schools and their subsequent effects on students.
Perhaps the most effective method of all was ‘Modelled Reading.’ Under this practice, a skilled reader demonstrated fluent reading. The reader’s correct pronunciation, appropriate pace, and correct expression provided students with an effective model to strive toward. It also dispelled doubts that often accompany self-learning, like pronunciation of new words or appropriate reading pace. This activity encouraged students to read more and read better.
This case study affirms that implementing an online grammar checker like Grammarly in a middle school setting can substantially improve writing skills among students. Besides enhancing their proficiency, it cultivates a sense of grammatical awareness among students, therefore elevating their overall literacy skills. As astutely put by one of the participating teachers, “The value of Grammarly extends beyond just correcting errors. It turns mistakes into teachable moments – moments that would have otherwise been lost.”
One of the critical observations was that children who were often read to or encouraged to read independently, displayed marked improvement in their writing skills compared to their counterparts. Exposure to different books broadened their vocabulary, enhanced creative thinking, and provided a sense of sentence structure, thereby improving their overall writing capabilities.
‘Echo Reading’ was another activity observed. During this activity, the teacher would read a short text, and the students were asked to imitate the teacher’s reading. This activity proved beneficial in terms of enhancing students’ pronunciation as well as intonation. Echo reading formed a concrete foundation for students to build their reading fluency upon.
A majority of students reported that Grammarly helped them understand and rectify their errors independently. Students expressed that they became more aware and confident in writing assignments. Moreover, the platform’s user-friendly interface contributed to students’ satisfaction, with 85% of students recommending its continued usage.
In conclusion, effective study planning is not one-size-fits-all. It requires trial and error, and customization according to individual needs. However, these guidelines offer a solid foundation upon which you can build a study plan that works best for you. Remember, the key to success lies in consistency, discipline, and comprehendible execution of your study plan.
Furthermore, students must address their perfectionist tendencies as it may often lead them to procrastinate. Instead of fearing to make a mistake, students should consider each task as an opportunity to learn. Practice and progression should be the emphasis rather than creating one ‘perfect’ piece of work.
The ‘Reader’s Theatre’ was arguably the most engaging reading fluency activity. It provided students with scripts of plays, allowing them to practice reading their assigned roles repeatedly until they could perform it fluidly. This playful and imaginative approach not only broke the stereotype of reading being a ‘quiet activity,’ but it also promoted better expression, pacing, and phrasing.
