Public Group active 7 months, 2 weeks agoAt Maple Elementary School, situated in a lower-income region, purchasing additional learning materials beyond the standard curriculum was not always feasible. Even more, Covid-19 related constraints and remote learning demands led the school to seek affordable, effective online resources. They decided to integrate free online reading comprehension passages into their 3rd-grade curriculum for their convenience, affordability, and user-friendly interactivity.
In the realm of learning, adopting healthy and effective study skills at an early age establishes a solid foundation for future academic success. The need for these skills rises significantly as children transition from one educational level to another. This report discusses the essential study skills which kids will need to foster, consisting of self-regulation, time management, effective note-taking, and motivation.
Phonics games for kids are specifically designed activities that engage children in fun-filled, interactive ways to learn phonics – the fundamental instrument in understanding the relationship between letters and sounds. Ensuring that youngsters grasp the concept of phonics not only immensely aids in their reading and writing abilities, but it also significantly contributes to their overall language development.
Moreover, there are also advanced level phonics games, such as sentence-making games. Using a collection of word cards, children have to form meaningful sentences. Such games help kids use phonics in real context, enhancing their comprehension skills.
Another effective study habit emphasized by Kids on the Yard is self-reflection, or, in other words, learning from one’s own mistakes. They encourage students to review their work to identify their strengths and areas in need of improvement.
Kids on the Yard is a dedicated educational organization that specializes in providing different study techniques for children, including online and in-person learning. The program aims to nurture and support children to develop effective study habits that will pave the way to academic success.
The promising results of this study suggest the possibility of incorporating free online reading comprehension passages into the regular curriculum although additional steps may need to be taken to ensure all students have equal access to the digital resources. It underscores the importance of leveraging technology to supplement conventional teaching methods and brings novelty and enhancement to learning, especially in foundational stages like the 3rd grade.
However, there are a few common barriers to kids developing proper study skills. Among those are distractions such as digital devices, lack of a quiet space, or a chaotic home environment. Guardians should be mindful of these and attempt to minimize distractions, establish a conducive environment, and encourage a routine. Moreover, it’s crucial to remember that no two children learn the same way. Hence, these skills should be taught, considering each child’s individual learning pattern, which can be visual, auditory, reading/writing, or kinesthetic.
The heart of the program’s success was its cogent integration of creative writing prompts into the curriculum. Kids were given a prompt, be it a situation, phrase, or picture, and were encouraged to weave their unique stories around it. The prompts acted as seeds to their imaginations, fostering a sense of wonder and curiosity.
In recent years, the introduction of technology into education has revolutionized traditional teaching methods and games, making phonics education more enjoyable and effective for kids. Digitized phonics games are colorful, interactive, and engaging. They prevent kids from feeling overwhelmed with the learning process, thereby enabling them to learn at their own pace. The variety of games also caters to individual learning preferences, making the experience personalized.
To combat the challenge of dwindling attention spans in children, ‘Kids on the Yard’ integrates engaging activities with traditional learning mechanisms. The curriculum is structured differently, employing storytelling, drawings, and group activities that push children to think critically, solve problems, and articulate their thoughts better.
‘Kids on the Yard’ is an innovative educational programme designed to elevate children’s writing skills, stimulate creativity, and promote greater classroom engagement. Overall, the pilot was a success, with the digital class showing a considerable increase in their reading comprehension skills compared to the other class. Teachers noted that the online passages were flexible and adaptable, catering to the diverse learning needs and pace of each student.
Other categories of phonics games for children are the blending games. In these games, children learn to blend distinct phonics sounds to form words. ‘Phonics Bingo’ and ‘Phonics Fishing’ are popular games in this category, where each child attempts to find or match words with the same sounding letters. These games effectively drill phonics blends into the minds of the young learners.
