Graceville Primary School, based in the multicultural suburb of Sydney, Australia, caters to 500 students from diverse ethnic and linguistic backgrounds. The school realized that many students from non-English speaking backgrounds showed a slump in their reading skills that was affecting their overall academic performance.
Despite the potential hiccups, homeschooling reading and writing curriculum offers some tangible benefits, and the growing homeschooling trend is a testament to its success. With the incorporation of well-rounded resources and tactics, the system can be an effective alternative to conventional education.
From calligraphy, writing transitioned towards a more functional form – handwriting. With the invention of the pen and paper, the act of writing became significantly more fluid and cost-effective, promoting widespread literacy in societies. Handwriting facilitated individualism in writing style, with each person possessing a distinct script. The advent of schooling systems put a significant emphasis on the importance of neat and clear handwriting. This stage of writing evolution focused less on aesthetic and designed style and more on legibility and understanding.
With the digital age, writing has transformed again to include forms such as blogging, microblogging, and social media updates. Writing is now largely done for a broad, often unknown, audience and is substantially faster and less formal. Modern writing tends to lean on terms of immediacy, urgency, and brevity. The rise of shorthand text speak, emojis, and GIFs as common communicative shortcuts is testament to this shift.
