At the beginning of the study, we observed that most students followed a homogenous study pattern that lacked a personalized revision regime. These practices mainly included last-minute cramming and rote learning encouraged by parental pressure, resulting in high levels of stress and ineffective learning.
Lastly, adopting a positive and encouraging mindset was essential. Encouragement and reassurance from teachers and parents played a significant role in boosting confidence. Positive reinforcement was recognized as a critical ingredient in developing effective writing skills.
Children were also guided to use graphic organizers to structure their thoughts before beginning to write. These visual tools helped them recall previously learned information, plan responses, and express what they wanted to write more clearly. Subsequently, their writing skills improved, and they were found to be more coherent and structured than before.
In recent times, the importance of cultivating effective study skills early in children’s academic journey is increasingly being recognized. This case study examines a program implemented in a suburban elementary school in Chicago aimed at enhancing children’s study strategies.
In terms of accessibility, most of these tools come with a free basic version. However, premium versions with advanced features and limitless checks are beneficial for students wishing to enhance their writing drastically.
Another notable tool is ‘ProWritingAid’, which offers advanced grammar and style checking combined with more in-depth reports to help improve students’ writing. It delineates areas of improvement in a detailed manner, helping students understand their weak points and work on them.
Student progress was tracked via a unique ‘Grammar Progress Report’ that detailed each student’s strengths and areas of improvement. Semester assessments included both written and oral evaluations to analyze the comprehensive understanding of the students. Additionally, parents’ engagement was encouraged through maintaining open communication about the students’ progress and providing them with resources to assist their children at home.

For the purpose of our study, we focused on three primary schools in New York City, with a participant pool of 150 students, aged 9-12 years, their teachers, and parents. The objective was to understand their existing study patterns, identify areas of improvement, and incorporate effective study strategies.
However, the transition to online reading comprehension is not devoid of challenges. Access to technology, slow internet connectivity, lack of digital literacy among less tech-savvy students and teachers, and possible distractions can hinder the efficiency of online tools.
