A plethora of online resources, like eBooks, virtual tutoring, and interactive learning platforms, offers homeschooling families an array of tools for comprehensive learning. Digital innovation in homeschooling not only makes education more interactive but also brings global classrooms to the home, broadening outlooks and giving access to various cultures and viewpoints.
She started by identifying educational programs specifically designed to help students improve their reading skills. The two core resources used were ‘Reading Plus’ and ‘Starfall’. ‘Reading Plus’ is a comprehensive digital English Language Arts program that integrates reading, vocabulary and comprehension skills enrichment. ‘Starfall,’ on the other hand, focuses more on phonetics and reading fluency.
To make the learning process more interactive, Mrs. Smith devised a system of rewards for students showing substantial progress, thereby motivating them to try harder. In a short time, students’ attitudes toward reading started changing. They became confident and developed interest in books, which before seemed too complex for their comprehension level.
Education plays a pivotal role in shaping individuals, societies, and nations. Sadly, many students struggle with reading, a foundational skill affecting their overall educational journey. In this case study, we explore how innovative educational resources, targeting struggling readers, transformed a third-grade classroom in Ashton Elementary School in the midwestern region of the United States.
As part of their educational commitment, KOTY introduced a comprehensive homeschooling reading curriculum aimed to bolster the ease and effectiveness of homeschool education. This curriculum focuses on improving each child’s literacy skills, promoting continuous improvement and love for reading.
Organization was a significant factor that influenced students’ study skills. A majority of high-achieving students had a systemized workflow for their assignments and learning schedule. They often used different platforms such as calendars, to-do lists, or digital applications to keep track of responsibilities and deadlines. Consistent and controlled organization helped them maintain a clear sight of academic goals, resulting in reduced stress and increased performance.
The second study skill that thrusted students towards success was active learning. Instead of merely reading textbooks or class notes, it was observed that successful student interacts with the content they learn. Methods such as questioning the material, summarizing, or explaining in their own words were all ways they engaged interactively with the subject matter. These habits fostered critical thinking, enhancing their comprehension and assimilation of information.
Time management emerged as another key feature of effective study skills. Students who excelled were those who planned their time wisely, undertook regular short study sessions, and always seemed prepared. Using spaced repetition and taking timely breaks, called the Pomodoro Technique, were popular among these students. The technique prevents burnout and appears to be more effective than cramming all information at once.
Search Engine Optimization or SEO as it is commonly known greatly relies on keywords to increase website visibility in search engine rankings. Among these keywords, there is a subset known as ‘Long-Tail Keywords’ that hold immense potential for businesses to boost their online discoverability.
Furthermore, students’ self-confidence and participation in classroom activities also considerably improved. The activities encouraged collaboration among students and reduced their fear of making mistakes. Parents also noted their children’s renewed enthusiasm and willingness to read at home.
After six months of these structured activities, the school noticed commendable improvement in the students’ overall reading fluency. There was a significant increase in their reading speed, accuracy, and expression, thereby improving comprehension. The interactivity of the activities enhanced their interest and engagement in reading, creating an environment that fostered continuous improvement and the sharing of knowledge.
Mrs. Smith incorporated these resources into the curriculum, alongside the regular reading syllabus. Students spent 30 minutes daily on ‘Reading Plus,’ increasing their exposure to various words and passages. ‘Starfall’ was utilized two times a week to enhance word pronunciation and reading fluency.
