It could be a simple game of tag, a treasure hunt, or a planting session in the school’s garden. Afterward, the students gather in their classrooms to discuss their experiences and brainstorm on a storyline. Later, the students write their stories, which could either be a personal experience or a tale inspired by their outdoor activities.
Significant academic literature demonstrates that reading and writing skills tend to decline over the long summer break, a phenomenon referred to as the “summer slide”. To combat this yearly setback and enhance academic outcomes, numerous schools and organizations have implemented summer learning programs. This case study dives into two such initiatives, aiming to analyze their impact and effectiveness.
Homeschooling also promotes an environment where students feel safe to make errors, ask questions, and express their thoughts freely, fostering a growth mindset. It encourages children to be active learners, questioning and analyzing what they read, and forming, articulating and defending their own opinions in writing.
Additionally, a homeschooling reading and writing curriculum often extends beyond the academic. It fosters important life skills such as persistence, resilience, and independence. It nurtures a life-long love for learning, reading, and writing, encourages curiosity, and cultivates critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
Furthermore, qualitative feedback revealed high levels of participant enjoyment and engagement — an indication that the program not only achieved its academic objectives but also successfully fostered a love for reading.
The teachers received training on test preparation strategies before the commencement of the study. Three approaches were used: self-testing, distributed practice, and interleaved practice. Each strategy was applied on a rotational two-week basis, and each student’s progress was carefully documented.
As a supportive community, incorporating informed strategies into education can greatly sharpen and enhance our children’s learning skills. By focusing on metacognition, or teaching children how to learn, we can prepare them to be well-rounded, successful students and future leaders. Future studies should trial this approach over a longer period, assessing its sustainability and long-term benefits.
However, despite its success, the program faced a unique challenge: accessibility. The cost of participation was a barrier for many low-income families, limiting the program’s reach and potentially its overall impact.
The data from the case study supports the hypothesis that scientific test preparation strategies, such as self-testing, distributed practice, and interleaved practice, can be beneficial for children’s learning success. While the percentage improvement varied between strategies and subjects, the overall increased engagement and improved habits suggest these would be beneficial in a longer-term, wider-scale application.
Rather than learning one topic at a time, the subjects were mixed, and students practiced them in an interleaved fashion. By switching between different types of problems, students were forced to think about their responses critically. The interleaved practice led to a modest improvement of 8% in scores. Although slower to demonstrate benefits, by the conclusion of the study, students were able to solve complex problems with more ease and confidence.
In 2020, a suburban elementary school in Michigan undertook a six-month study involving students of 4th and 5th grade. The objective was to enhance the students’ test preparation skills in a structured, scientific manner. Around 200 students participated, with a near-equal ratio of boys and girls.
A fifth-grader, Daniel, expressed his love for the program, exclaiming, “I enjoy how I can combine playing and writing. It’s like I get to live the stories that I make!” Many other children have similarly positive responses.
‘Kids on the Yard’ is demonstrating how a flexible and innovative teaching approach can yield practical and successful educational outcomes. It is increasingly proving that learning can be fun and that even complex skills like writing can be nurtured in a complimentary atmosphere of play and creativity. The question then arises, should more schools aboard the Kids on the Yard method? As the proverb goes, proof of the pudding is in the eating, or in this case, in the writing.
This non-profit organization designed a writing-focused summer program aimed at improving children’s writing abilities and fostering a passion for the craft. The curriculum featured group sessions on different writing genres, peer writing reviews, and individual coaching.
