Snyder is currently working on expanding the program into other schools in the district, aiming to arm more children with the tools to manage their tasks, overcome procrastination, and essentially, engineer their futures.
Education is an elemental part of a child’s upbringing, shaping their cognitive, emotional, social, and pre-k homeschooling programs online intellectual growth. Recognizing the significant role parents play in their children’s educational journey, academic institutions and educational organizations have debuted a variety of resources to support parents. These resources are designed to bridge the gap between home and school, giving parents the knowledge and tools they need to complement the formal education process.
However, without suitably addressing the challenges faced by parents in utilizing these resources, the effort could fall on deaf ears. Addressing this, nonprofit organizations like United Way are stepping up their efforts to support parents. They offer workshops that guide parents through using these new educational resources effectively, thereby enhancing their ability to support their children’s educational development.
The power of writing is such that it can help individuals express their deepest feelings, emotions, and experiences, transcending geographic and cultural boundaries. It draws immense strength from its ability to solidify emotions and transform them into something tangible. Renowned authors and poets have long harnessed the power of the pen to influence, inspire, and challenge societal norms.
In an increasingly digital world where visuals garner the most attention, introductory writing—whether for purposes of communication, education or self-expression—continues to leave an indelible mark on society. It is a powerful tool that aids in shaping thoughts, conveying unsaid emotions, and voicing opinions, in such a way that has influenced humankind throughout history and continues to do so.
A significant determinant of one’s writing style is vocabulary. An extensive vocabulary allows one to express ideas more succinctly and engagingly. Reading diverse genres, learning new words daily, using synonyms for repeated words, and using a thesaurus can help build a rich word bank.
Robed Snyder, the mastermind behind KOTY, understands the importance of overcoming procrastination at a young age. She says, “Procrastination may seem harmless at first, but it can quickly evolve into a negative habit that hampers productivity, generates stress, and stifles personal and academic growth. Through KOTY, we aim to empower kids to tackle hostility towards procrastination head-on.”
In recent years, the importance of creative writing in education has taken center stage. Children who are exposed to creative writing, as opposed to rigid learning models, have shown improved comprehension, vocabulary, and creativity. They learn to express their thoughts more clearly and argue their perspectives more convincingly.
Educators, too, testify to the transformation KOTY is fostering. Emily Reed, a middle school teacher, said, “It’s amazing how a ‘kids-on-the-yard’ approach can translate to ‘kids-at-the-desk’. My students are more prompt with task completion and have more self-belief. It’s like they’ve jumped over their procrastination hurdle.”
Writing, in its essence, is a manifestation of thoughts and opinions—putting abstract ideas into words, and thereby giving them clarity. It can range from something as simple as a personal journal entry to more complex forms like novel writing. Writing can also be a very effective instrument in influencing public opinion. Journalism, blogs, essays all utilize writing as their primary medium to reach the people. But it doesn’t stop there; writing also plays a pivotal role in education and academia— serving as a medium to propagate knowledge and stimulate the intellectual growth of individuals.
Even amid their rigorous academic commitments, the playful chatter of KOTY members echoes throughout school yards not only in animated vivacity but serves as a living testament to the resilience of children taking the reigns of their learning. But beyond the laughter lies a crucial lesson – procrastination, a ubiquitous pitfall for many, can be conquered.
John Lopez, a 5th grader who is part of the initiative, shared how KOTY has changed his outlook, he said, “I used to put off my homework and then I’d be anxious all weekend. But now, I’ve learned to break it down into smaller parts and just start. It feels so much better not to have it hanging over me.”
Activities within the KOTY framework target different factors that birth procrastination, such as lack of interest, fear of failure, perfectionism, or just being overwhelmed. The program involves a multi-pronged approach – fun, engaging tasks that subtly instill time management skills, the growth mindset, goal-setting, and the value of small, manageable tasks over larger, overwhelming ones.
