Another important strategy was taking advantage of spare time during the day. Many top-performing students habitually carried some homework or reading material with them and utilized breaks between classes, bus rides, or waiting time to catch up with their work. These small pockets of ‘extra’ time, when used effectively, can cumulatively contribute to a significant reduction in workload.
A noteworthy observation was that students who participated in extracurricular activities were not necessarily at a disadvantage. Quite the contrary, in fact. They often demonstrated superior organizational and time-management skills compared to their peers who did not partake in such activities. This may be attributed to the need for routine and discipline imposed by such engagements.

One of the most fundamental tips for managing homework and extracurricular activities is organization and time management. Using calendars, digital organizers, or even a basic notebook to record important dates, deadlines, practices, games, and assignments seem to significantly lower academic stress.
Parents and teachers can play an instrumental role in developing organization skills in children. They can start by setting a good example – demonstrating efficient use of time, maintaining a well-ordered environment at home or school, and managing tasks efficiently. Additionally, they can provide direct instruction, practice and reinforcement, and continual support as children work to develop these skills.
Time management is another key aspect of organization skills. It not only helps children in balancing their academic and recreational activities but also ensures they allot adequate time for rest. Skills such as setting a routine, sticking to a schedule, and prioritizing tasks are crucial in this aspect.
